Japan-Korea Jointly-produced Student Films
The Japan-Korea exchange symposium and the screening of films that were jointly-produced by Japanese and Korean students were held in Hall D1 of The Tokyo International Forum on November 19, attracting a full capacity audience.
The two films put on the screen ("NOZOKI" directed by YOSHII Kazuyuki and "KIENAI" directed by BYUN Byung-Jun) were jointly produced by students at Graduate School of Film and New Media of TOKYO GEIJUTSU DAIGAKU and students at the Korean Academy of Film Arts. Students in one country went over to the other country and organized mixed teams for joint production. Although the students encountered various difficulties in unfamiliar surroundings, they deepened their understanding towards mutual cultures through film production. The theme of the scenario, "Love or Misunderstanding," naturally appears in the works produced by those students with such experience.
After the screening, An Cheong-Sook, Chairperson of KOFIC, Park Ki-yong, Director of KAFA, Lee Bong-woo, Representative of Cinequanon, and ICHIYAMA Shozo, Program director of TOKYO FILMeX, attended the symposium as panelists. Opinions were actively exchanged based on the theme of "the future of Asian films." For example, the following points were discussed: the current situation in which new waves, which are an increase in epic entertainment films and the downdraft of auteurism, have been introduced in Asian films. The Asian film has obtained global accolades due to the rich expression of its inherent culture since the middle of 1980s. In addition, the importance of the production of the "Asian film" based on Asia's own culture by each Asian country particularly through the cooperation of the three countries, Japan, China, and Korea, was discussed. These countries share common cultural and historical backgrounds. Furthermore, the possibility of joint production through which unexpected works can be produced due to mixed talents with distinct nationalities was highlighted.
