"Art and Education 2007" Symposium
On November 25, the University held a symposium entitled "Art and Education: A New Perspective" in which participants sought to arrive at a comprehensive vision of the role of art education in future society.
The goal of the symposium was to investigate possibilities for a better, more inspiring environment that will enable art to flourish. At the same time, as part of a conceptualization of the future of art education, the symposium looked at the fundamental role art plays in personality development.
The symposium consisted of three events and lasted throughout the day.
Participants in the first event included specialists in the fields of art and culture as well as individuals involved in art education, mainly from schools. The participants discussed ways of enriching art education in elementary and middle schools, and emphasized the role the Tokyo University of the Arts will play in vitalizing art education and culture.
The second event was aimed at students from the elementary to high-school levels. The students were offered a choice of seven innovative activities, based on the school curriculum but with a twist unique to the Tokyo University of Arts: for example, students conducted an orchestra, made carvings from an enormous six-ton rock, or participated in live drawing of a real penguin. Afterwards, the students discussed a variety of subjects including their impressions and thoughts on the various activities.
In the third event, the finale, the adults and students got together and went over the events of the day. A common theme was the expectation of and desire for the University to play an active role in art education at the elementary and secondary levels in order to enrich the overall artistic environment surrounding students.
