Geidai Music Festival Commemorates 120th Anniversary of Foundation

In commemorating the 120th anniversary of the establishment of the University, the Geidai Music Festival celebrated Geidai's 120-year history over three days beginning January 4. The festival hosted six concerts and two symposia, among other events.

The festival focused on the University's history of turning out the most prominent figures in society and the music world in modern Japan. The University's educational history was also lauded, in honor of steady progress and the continuity of the institution's legacy from one generation to the next.

A total of 600 graduates, teachers, and students took the stage during the event. The festival was well-attended with some 4,300 visitors.

The final event consisted of a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony by leading figures in the Japanese music world. The symphony had previously been performed in 1924 by the orchestra and choir of the Tokyo Music School. This early event was an important milestone for the University, as it marked the first performance of the entire symphony by a Japanese ensemble. On this occasion, the brilliantly harmonized performance of the grand orchestra roused the capacity audience, closing the Anniversary Festival with a memorable finale.
