The University Art Museum: The Collection Exhibition
This exhibition consists of two parts: the collections of Taito Ward and those of Tokyo University of the Arts
Part 1: Fumio Asakura
Part 1 of this exhibition presents select items from the Fumio Asakura collection of the Asakura Choso (sculpture) Museum, currently closed for preservation work. With his talent and skills, Fumio Asakura (1883-1964) was the driving force behind the rapid modernization of Japanese sculpture during the Meiji era (1868-1912), when the Japanese government energetically promoted westernization but the country still lacked a basic understanding of Western sculpture. The present exhibition covers the entire range of Asakura's works from his training to his final years, creating a complete picture demonstrating the charm of these sculptures which laid the foundations for the modern field in Japan. The sculptor particularly enjoyed creating representations of cats, and the current exhibition provides a great opportunity to see all 32 of the cat-themed Asakara sculptures owned by the museum. Enjoy the world of Fumio Asakura, permeated by a free-flowing yet realistic sense of expression gleaned from observing nature.
Part 2: Geidai (geidai means “university of the arts”) Collection
Asakura studied and later taught at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Tokyo School of Fine Arts), currently known as Tokyo University of the Arts. In Part 2 of the exhibition, a number of masterpieces, primarily featuring animals, have been brought together in one location. Since its establishment as the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko in 1887, the university has been situated near Ueno Zoo, providing both students and teaching staff ample opportunities for close contact with animals. As a result, many animal-themed works have been created. Some works feature animals as their central theme, while in other works animals play a significant role despite having proportions small enough to go nearly unnoticed within the larger theme. This section showcases an extensive collection of works ranging from antique animal-themed works, which were originally acquired as study materials, to past student thesis projects featuring zoo animals.
This exhibition consists of two parts, each a separately compiled collection. By viewing both parts, you will come to appreciate from many different angles how artists have learned from nature, which is often said to be the starting point for artists. Enjoy also at this exhibition how the artists' perspectives and attitudes vary as they each study nature in their own way.

The Baroque Oboe and the Baroque Oboe d'Amore
The Baroque oboe and the Baroque oboe d'amore are members of the oboe family that were used primarily in the Baroque period.
The center instrument at the back is a Baroque oboe d'amore, constructed in the 1990s by Marcel Ponseele of Brussels, Belgium, as a copy of an Eichentopf instrument dated around 1724-1730 in Leipzig, Germany. In Italian, "Oboe d'amore" means "oboe of love." As its name suggests, its tone is sweet and slightly muffled. J. S. Bach, who was successful in Leipzig during the same period, is known to have enjoyed playing it.
The pale, whitish instrument on the right is a Baroque oboe, constructed in 1985 by Utrecht resident Toshi Hasegawa as a copy of a Jacob Denner instrument owned by a museum in Nuremberg, Germany.
The original Jacob Denner instrument is one of the highest-quality Denners in existence; this particular model was used in many regions during the 1720s.
It looks white because boxwood was used in its construction.
The brown instrument on the left is also a Baroque oboe, based on a 1720s Thomas Stanesby Sr. instrument owned by the Rosenbaum Collection in the United States. This copy was constructed in 1990 by Olivier Cote in Paris.
One could say that this is the perfect instrument with which to play Handel's works, as he is from the same place and time.
When observing these oboes from the Baroque period, their simplicity in appearance stands out, especially in comparison to modern instruments with their numerous keys. When played, these instruments are light and subtle, yet rich in tone and in variety of expression, catching the ear of the listener. Listeners may note that simpler construction can make stronger, freer performances possible.

The Tokyo Fine Arts School (the predecessor of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) started to collect art materials for education and research prior to its foundation in 1887. These were first stored in the library called "Bunko" and then were archived in the University Library for many years after the unification of Tokyo Fine Arts School and Tokyo Music School in 1949. In 1970 music materials archived by the Faculty of Music since its preceding Tokyo Music School period, were added to the collection when the art section was separated from the library as the Art Museum, established as an inter-university research institute of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Music.
In 1999 The University Art Museum was opened due to aged facilities and needs of commensurate storages and exhibitions space according to the scale of the collection. Today this collection is one of Japanes largest with about 28000 pieces based on Japanese modern art including art works of former teachers and students.

Wagner tuba
The Wagner tuba is an uncommon mid-low range brass instrument seldom played except in certain pieces composed by Wagner or Bruckner. According to the musical instrument purchase ledger of the Tokyo Music School (the forerunner of our faculty of music), this particular instrument was produced in 1923 by Nippon Kangakki Seisakusho (Japanese Wind Instrument Manufacturing Company). Its designer, a company employee at that time, was a gifted design engineer who had graduated from the engineering department of an imperial university. According to our concert records, Brucknerfs Seventh Symphony was played for the first time in Japan two years after this tuba was purchased. It would appear this instrument was purchased specifically for this performance.

-The Horn that Beethoven loved-
Invention Horn (made in France)Produced by Raoux
It is perhaps one of the most simple and beautiful designs in the history of orchestra music.
When Tokyo University of the Arts purchased this horn, it was believed that its year of manufacture was in the 1830fs. However, it turned out to be actually made in around 1800 as a result of the judgment of a specialist from Netherlands who visited Tokyo University of the Arts this spring. This time coincides with the time when Beethoven composed gHorn Sonata.h It is also known that Giovanni Punto, a horn player, gave the first performance of this sonata with Beethoven, using this kind of horn.
It is said that the gInvention Hornfsh style originally came from hunting horns. In order not to startle horses with reflected light, people painted the inside of these horns black. Therefore, this custom of painting the bell black gradually changed to intricate designs as in this horn which is decorated in the style of morning glories for use in high court.

Arithmetik Garden
Arithmetik Garden consists of eight gates, including an entrance gate, an exit gate shown as =73, and six arithmetic gates shown as +5, +8, ×3, ×7, -4, and ÷2. The viewer picks up a card at the entrance and hangs it around the neck. Then the viewer tries to make the initial number equal to 73 by going through the arithmetic gates such as (10+5-4)×7-4=73. The viewer feels as if he or she became a number to be transformed by arithmetic operations.
