1948 Born in Tochigi Prefecture.
1973 Graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
Department of Fine Arts, majoring in crafts.
Enrolled in graduate school at Tokyo University of fine Arts and Music.
1975 Appointed part-time lecturer at the University.
1986 Appointed Assistant Professor at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts
and
Music.
1990 Appointed Lecturer at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
1994 Appointed Associate Professor at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts
and Music.
1996 Gave lectures and workshop on Ceramics at Tacoma Community College
in
W.A., U.S.A., this was for a first Summer Course.
Gave lectures and demonstrations at Anadoule University, Turkey.
1997 Gave Lectures and a workshop on Ceramics at Tacoma Community College
in
W.A, USA. This was for the second Summer Course.
Gave lectures and a workshop to 4th year students at Central Academy of Arts
and Design
in Beijing, China, as a guest Professor.
1998 Gave Lectures and a workshop on ceramics
at the "5th Ceramic Art School of
Korea-Japan", at Kyung Hee University in Soul, Korea, as a guest Professor.

1983 Awarded Chiba Prefecture Superintendent of Education Prize at the Chiba
Prefecture Exhibition.
1983 Participated in the Japan Ceramics Today Exhibition held at the Smithsonian
Institution Washington, D. C.,
and The Victoria and Albert Museum, in London.
1986 Awarded Governor Prize at the Saitama Prefecture Exhibition.
1992Awarded Aviation Day Art Prize from Japan Aviation Foundation
1994 Work accepted at the Triennial Porcelain Exhibition at Izushi.
1995 Work accepted at the Japan Ceramic Exhibition
1997 Awarded Best Prize at the 4th Annual Pot of Bonsai Exhibition.
One Man Exhibition
1978 First one-man exhibition held at the Mune Kougei Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo.
1981 One-man exhibition held at Nihonbashi Mitukoshi Department Store. Exhibition
held there every year to present.
1995 "The Vibrant Potters of Tochigi Fumio Shimada" organized by Shimotuke
Newspaper Publishing Company.
One- man exhibitions have been at major art galleries such as Gendai Kougei Fujinoya,
Kougei Murata, Kokou,
Okazaki Art Gallery, Manyodo, and Yurakucyo seibu takanawa
Art Salon and galleries in leading department stores such as Mitukoshi in Nihonbashi,
Chiba, and Niigata,
Takashimaya in Yonago and Okayama, Daimaru in Osaka,
Tenmaya in Hiroshima, Matuzakaya in Yamagata, Seibu in Utunomiya, and the Seibu
Takanawa Kai at the Osaka Royal Hotel.
