Ⅲ. Guidelines for Doctoral Degree Conferral Process

3. Graduate School of Film and New Media

3.1. Entrance Examination and Candidate Screening

The quality of the works of those who have engaged in artistic endeavors up to now is assessed before enrollment to determine whether they possess the capabilities and attributes to undertake sustained advanced research while enrolled in a doctoral program. Furthermore, research outcomes in researchers ’ articles and other writings will be assessed to determine whether they have the communication abilities to perform sustained research. Note that enrollment candidates will be asked to submit detailed research plans.

3.2. Program Completion Requisites

Three years of enrollment in this graduate school, acquisition of 10 credits in the required subjects, and, moreover, a doctoral dissertation defense (thesis and creative work) and successful completion of an examination.

3.3. Teaching Faculty

Each student is assigned two advisors (an advisor and an assistant advisor) upon enrollment. While enrolled in the graduate school, advisors advise students regarding all facets of their studies such as guidance related to their research, completion of course subjects, and leaves of absence or withdrawal from school. Students meet with their two advisors at the beginning of the academic year and then draft a course registration card and research plan that shows the details of their annual plan.

3.4. Degree Conferral

The Graduate School of Film and New Media confer a Doctor of Film and New Media degree upon candidates who have successfully completed a doctoral course.

3.5. Program Completion

(1) Research initiatives in Film and New Media studies (two credits)
  15 Omnibus Lectures during the first semester of the first year.

(2) Research program in Film and New Media Studies I-A, I-B, II-A, and II-B (one credit)
  Omnibus Lectures thatdiscuss specific fields are heldonce a semester during the first and second years. The two advisors review the course content required for students’ individual research topics and hold lectures. Students are obliged to provide their own reports on research activities.

(3) Project in Film and New Media Studies I-A, I-B, II-A, and II-B
  Undertaken once a semester during the first and second years in accordance with the course registration card and research plan. Presented and submitted in the form of a survey thesis during the first year and submitted for preliminary examination during the second year.

3.6. Degree Examination

The degree examination consists of the preliminary and final examinations. Candidates who successfully pass the preliminary examination qualify for the final examination.

3.6.1. Preliminary Examination
1) Application
The following materials are submitted to the Office of Educational Affairs by the end of January, that is, in the year in which the program is scheduled to be completed: (1) two copies of the application for a preliminary examination (one original and onecopy) a list of research and creative activities (for preliminary examination) (3) a doctoral dissertation summary (for the preliminary examination), and (4) a resume.
2) Achievement Assessment
The (draft) table below is used to calculate points for the achievement assessment on the degree application. Five or more points are required in order to pass.

In regard to calculating the points (1) 1/n point will be awarded in case the item in question involved a co-presentation (where “n” equals the number of presenters) (2) the higher point total will be used when a single dissertation, project, or work falls into more than one category, and (3) as a rule, points are awarded only once for a dissertation, project, or work whose content is identical.

3.6.2. Final Examination
1) Final Examination Elements
The final examination consists of an application, interim review (closed to the public), and public review.
2) Final Examination Application
A copy each of (1) final examination petition (one original and one copy) (2) list of research and creative activities (for final application) (3) doctoral dissertation summary (4) a resume, and (5) doctoral dissertation and information regarding the final examination format are submitted to the Office of Educational Affairs by the end of April, that is, in the year in which the program is scheduled to be completed.
3) Interim Review (closed to the public)
The interim review is held in July during the final year of the program. It consists of an oral presentation related to the doctoral dissertation and artistic work, depending on the research course selected.
4) Public Review

The date of the public review (oral presentation and presentation of artistic work [depending on the research course selected]) is held in October during the final year. As a rule, the first draft of the final version of the doctoral dissertation is submitted to the advisor and assistant advisor in a PDF format before the public review. An oral presentation is based on this version. The artistic work is presented at an exhibition or screening.

5) Submission of the Final Draft of the Final Version of the Doctoral Dissertation
As a rule, the final draft of the final version of the doctoral dissertation is submitted to the advisor and assistant advisor in a PDF format in December. Dissertation revisions are, in principle, not permitted after that time.
6) Performance Critique
Performance in the final review is rated based on the following items:
(1) Topic Selection
  • Whether research goals and context were appropriate and clear
  • Whether existing research was sufficiently investigated
(2) Efforts on Research
  • Whether related expertise has been satisfactorily acquired
  • Whether appropriate approaches were taken in regard to the topic
(3) Comprehensive Level of Research
  • Whether appropriate methodologies were employed in regard to the selected topic and adequate research outcomes were obtained
(4) Dissertation Expression and Style
  • Whether the descriptions are logical and clear
  • Whether the dissertation includes the appropriate format
(5) Presentation Style
  • Whether the content of the research was presented in an intelligible manner
(6) Q&A
  • Whether questions were answered precisely
