A drum widely used in folk and popular music. The player sits or stands. The drum is placed horizontally and played with one hand on each surface. Timbre can be varied by hitting the drum with the fingernails or with a ring which is placed on a finger. Usually the drumhead played with the right hand is smaller and produces a higher pitch than the drumhead played with the left.
