An end-blown flute made from a thick root segment of bamboo. Held vertically. By changing the angle of the blowing hole, microtonal pitch changes and a variety of timbres are produced. Used as a solo instrument in classical Japanese music as well as various ensemble styles and for folk song accompaniment.
