( JPEG format )An end-blown flute made from a long, thin bamboo pipe. Also called donxiao. Held vertically. A node remains to cover the upper end of the pipe. A front edge of the node is partially cut out to form a blowhole, the inside of which is cut diagonally. It produces a relatively soft sound, with a gentle tone quality. Played solo, as well as in duets with the qin or pipa, and in various ensemble styles.
