The instrument is held vertically, with the lower end positioned slightly away from the body. A thin bamboo membrane covers an extra hole on the side of the instrument causing a distinctive buzzing tone quality. A tassel, which is used to carry the instrument, is strung through a hole at the instrument's lower end. Used for solo playing as well as for various kinds of ensemble music.
