Castanets held together by a metal hinge. The player's thumb and index finger pass through the leather cords connected to both halves of the castanet. This instrument forms a pair with the si (039). The singer holds the si in the right hand and the wa in the left playing opposing rhythms. Weak beats are sounded on the si, and strong beats on the wa.
