The player sits cross-legged facing the instrument and plays with a mallet held between the second and middle fingers of each hand. The instrument forms a pair with 053, but its tuning is slightly different. The lower of the two (052) is called pengumbang, the higher (053) pengisep. Used to accompany the shadow play (wayang kulit) and in many Hindu ceremonies.
