Philippines(Mindanao)
bamboo; L.34.0cm

A bamboo jew's harp. The instrument is divided into two parts of equal length, the wider section acting as a handle. A lamella has been cut away in the narrow section. The player holds the handle between his thumb and index finger and places the instrument between his lips. With the right hand the tip of the lamella is plucked, causing vibrations which resonate in the oral cavity. By varying his breathing and the shape of the oral cavity, the player can amplify and resonate certain overtones and produce a melody.
