The instrument is placed on the knee with the peg box uppermost and plucked with the fingers of both hands. Its music depicts natural phenomena and is characterized by the repectition of short melodic patterns. Traditionally used in ceremonial contexts, as well as for accompanying songs and dances. Strings for the shamisen are applied on this zither.
