The surface of each membrane is played upon with a beater made of bamboo is held in the right hand and the palm of the left. The tension of the right drumhead can be altered by pushing the leather clasp along the V-shaped tuning cords. Widely used in traditional music. Cyclic rhythm patterns called changdan are played.
