The instrument is placed on a table in front of the player with the upper bridge to the right. The player sits slightly to the right of center. Except for the little finger of both hands, the player presses the strings with four fingers of the left hand, and plucks with the four fingers of the right. As a guide to correct pitch placement, 13 small pieces of shell are inlaid at various points on the playing surface. As an instrument of classical music, it has been a favorite of the literati in ancient times. Played both as a solo instrument and in duets with the xiao.
