A relatively small version of the South India oboe, Both tone quality and the volume produced are weaker. Used in nighttime ceremonies at Hindu temples, as well as for dance accompaniment and during festivals. Usually played in ensembles with the upanga or the donai, oboes which provide a drone, and the rhythm instruments mrdangam or danki.
