Geidai Power Creation Initiative Selected for the Global Traction Type Category of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Super Global Universitity Creation Support Project

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Super Global University Creation Support Project aims to promote reform by supporting universities working to internationalize and strengthen their international competitiveness. Under the Global Traction Type designation, the project provides targeted support for universities, the purpose of which is to promote globalization of Japanese society. The project aims to push the boundaries of university education based on their strengths and achievements.
This year, Tokyo University of the Arts was the only fine arts university out of 37 Super Global Universities selected for the Geidai Power Creation Initiative–Only One Global Strategy. As part of the initiative and under the leadership of the President, Tokyo University of the Arts, which holds a highly regarded position in Japan and Asia, aims to utilize its strengths and characteristics to construct a platform for international collaboration. The initiative will utilize all available university resources under an “All Geidai” system; to develop new global strategies to enhance human resources and strategic overseas development and the establishment of a more international presence.
The university will aim to further clarify its role as a central organization in the Asia region and enhance its position as a global leader. While utilizing its collaborative bases with overseas universities and partner organizations, the goal for the university is for it to surpass its position as an influential international university of art, becoming a global brand under the “Geidai” label. Additionally, by strengthening governance functions, the university will continue to nurture world-class artists and promote arts education reform.
Furthermore, the university has the advantage of being located in the Ueno Gardens area and aims to utilize the potential of the cultural facilities and assets present in the region. There are plans to develop the universities’ human resources in line with the “New Plan for Ueno Cultural Gardens” initiative, which is under development with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in mind. Under the plan, the university will lead efforts to transform the Ueno Gardens area into an “International City of Scholarship” based on the results of a cultural program model. By utilizing its human resources, the university will prompt continuous development toward the establishment of an International Center of Art and Culture, in par with world centers, such as Paris and London. Moreover, the University aims to create an array of cultural resources, through collaboration with organizations such as the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, thus contributing to a network of art and culture for the international city of Tokyo.
Under the “All Geidai” system and the leadership of President Miyata, Tokyo University of the Arts will use this opportunity to pursue groundbreaking initiatives as a flagship for fine arts universities in Asia and a leader in the implementation of Japan’s national strategies.
